Jessica
Nakakande Gloria is a teenage mother aged 16. She hails from Bukondo village in Namayumba Sub County. She came to the MHC with her one and a half year old child who was seriously sick. Gloria said she has no money to provide food for the baby nor does her mother who she stays with as she also has no source of income. The child, Jessica, whose father was a house help in the neighborhood run off upon learning of Gloria’s pregnancy for fear of being arrested and charged with defilement of a minor.
The nurses administered only deworming drugs to the child and referred her to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized treatment of Kwashakor, since she had all the signs of the disease. Jessica was extremely weak, had mouth and body sours and a swollen body.
BKB MHC provided 60,000 shillings to facilitate her take the child to hospital who was admitted upon arrival. After one month in hospital there was a remarkable change; Jessica had put on weight and looking much better and stronger. That was a life saved from the verge of death.
